The Great Commission: Around the World and Down the Road

Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:16-20

So much is packed into such few words of The Great Commission. Jesus’ words to his disciples were clear and to-the-point; “Go and make believers of everyone, baptize them and teach them what I have taught you. And I’ll be with you every step of the way.” If ever we feel unsure of our purpose as Christians here on earth, ever without direction or without support, we can look to the words of Jesus in this 28th chapter of Matthew and see all we need to know. Now, if only it felt so simple to us in those times!

It seems as though many Christians think that fulfilling The Great Commission can only be done by traveling to other countries and evangelizing; that is a facet of fulfilling Jesus’ call, but it’s just a part of the big picture. So often we are so focused on going into the rest of the world we forget the people in our own backyards who need Jesus.

The Great Commission is all-encompassing and includes people in third world countries as well as people three streets over from your house. This is amazing because God can give us a heart for the lost, no matter where they live. So if you’re unable to leave your job or your family for a week or two to go on a mission trip to Calcutta, for example, don’t be discouraged. You can make an impact in your own city for the kingdom of God!

You may have a heart for children; consider volunteering at an after school program for underprivileged children who need some extra attention and care. Maybe you have a bunch of clothes in your closet that you never wear; instead of having a garage sale to earn money for yourself, give the proceeds to a family in need or donate the clothes to a woman’s shelter. Do you have a skill or talent that would benefit someone else? Think about teaching an expectant mother how to cook some healthy meals or how to sew some items for her home.

Showing the love of Jesus comes in many forms. Making disciples of people around the world is the commission. What is the means to achieving it? People need to experience the love of Christ in tangible ways. Often this is the best way of making true disciples. People are much more willing to hear you share the truth of the gospel when they know and respect you as a considerate, loving, life-giving person who truly cares about them in all aspects. God is the Creator of the universe. Creativity is no mystery to Him, so let’s ask him for creative inspiration for reaching people half way around the globe and also half way down our streets.

Yes!!!!! There are so many ways. As for me I just want to teach everyone about following the dreams God has placed in them versus being doormat, they could help bring so many people to God. Love your post!!!
